People of the World parade through North Camp

Preparations for the annual North Camp Summer Fayre on July 11 are already under way with a full and fun packed day planned.

This year, people of the North Camp community will be able help plan and run the event now that the North Camp Matters Community Association has set up a Summer Fayre sub-committee, with support from Rushmoor Borough Council.

This year’s theme is ‘People of the World’ and lots of local groups and organisations are already signing up to be part of the event. On the day, there will be a colourful walking procession through the streets of North Camp starting from Lynchford Road. The procession will make its way to Queen’s Road Recreation Ground where there will be a Summer Fayre complete with stalls, music, arena displays and a car boot sale.

The Fayre, supported by Rushmoor Borough Council, is now in its eighth year, and provides local people with an enjoyable and affordable day out in the heart of their own community. It also offers local groups and organisations a real opportunity to promote their work, raise funds and reach a local audience.

Mike Palmer, Chairman of North Camp Matters Community Association said: “The North Camp Summer Fayre is a very popular event that we, as an organisation, have been closely involved in since the first Fayre in 2002. I believe that we are well placed within the community to work with local people to plan this event in future years. The event has always been supported by Rushmoor Borough Council and while this support will continue, the Summer Fayre sub-committee will have overall responsibility for this annual event from 2010.”

Mike added: “We are looking for enthusiastic local volunteers, anyone can get involved and it’s not limited to members of the North Camp Matters Community Association. We’d like to hear from local people, community groups and clubs – anyone interested in helping us plan the event or being part of the day.”

This year the sub-committee is working closely with Debbie Whitcombe, Regeneration Officer at Rushmoor Borough Council. Debbie has been involved in the planning of the Fayre since it began in 2002.

Debbie said: “The first Summer Fayre brought together local schools, pre-schools and voluntary organisations to celebrate Jubilee year. We never thought it would still be going strong eight years later. We are pleased that there is so much local enthusiasm for the event and that the community are looking to take ownership of this event in the future.  The Council will still be involved and will continue to support and play an active role in the event.”
