Presentation to show life after the tsunami
A
METHODIST minister who lost 11 members of his family in the
Asian tsunami disaster is to give a presentation on the reconstruction
of the Sri Lankan coast.
Rev
David Jebb, minister of the Methodist churches in North Camp
and Aldershot, lost his sister, father and nine other relatives
when the waves destroyed his family’s home village of Komari.
In
May Mr Jebb, another minister and three counsellors travelled
to Sri Lanka for three weeks.
They
managed to help 60 long-term projects during their stay and produced
a 75-minute DVD of their experience entitled Sorrow and Smiles
of Sri Lanka.
Tomorrow
(Satuday) Mr Jebb will give the presentation alongside the DVD
and will talk about his time in Sri Lanka, the latest news on
what he found and his hopes for the future of the country.
He
said: “Five of us went there and worked there for three
weeks. We travelled to the southern and eastern parts of Sri
Lanka and worked with local leaders.
“We
managed to help projects from buying an Indian boat for a fishing
community to helping one of the organisations put up a tsunami
warning tower.
“Then
we came back and thought to tell people what we have done. It’s
ongoing relief work — we simply couldn’t fulfil all
the needs while we were out there.”
The
event will start at 6.30pm at Aldershot Methodist Church in Herrett
Street, Aldershot, where a faith meal will be provided.
People
are asked to bring a contribution, either savoury or sweet.
The
presentation will follow the meal and there will be a collection
taken afterwards for the relief work in Sri Lanka.
