Short extension to Park Road Trial
Rushmoor
Council's Cabinet has decided to delay a final decision on
the controversial Park Road one-way scheme in Farnborough.
This
week, the Cabinet recognised the difficulty of getting a balanced
view on the scheme designed to make Park Road safer for residents,
motorists and children at the three schools nearby. In making
a decision on this very difficult and sensitive issue, the concerns
of Park Road residents have to be balanced with those of other
road users.
The
Cabinet has asked for further work and a report back next month
(April). As a result, the pilot scheme will continue for the
time being. The Cabinet also agreed that the lack of capacity
on Lynchford Road is an obstacle to improving traffic in south
Farnborough. Rushmoor will therefore step up the pressure on
Hampshire County Council, which is responsible for Lynchford
Road, to find ways of improving it. This needs to be done before
the major development planned between Aldershot and Farnborough
puts more traffic on local roads.
The
pilot will be considered by the Cabinet again at the end of April,
providing more time for residents and road users to comment.
More work will also be done to deal with some of the issues that
have been raised already by those who commented.
Cllr
Roland Dibbs, Rushmoor's Cabinet member for Environment, said:
"The
trial has been extremely worthwhile and shown that the County
needs to make improvements to Lynchford Road urgently as part
of a wider review of traffic in the North Camp area."
Jim
Pettitt, Head of Street Scene, said:
"The
trial scheme was useful to see if a short-term solution could
be found to improve the environment and safety of residents in
Park Road and the young children attending the schools nearby.
If this has not got the unanimous support of residents, we should
not continue with the scheme. We now have the chance to see how
improvements can be made and to press the County on the critical
issue of Lynchford Road. "
