New activity centre gets set to take off at Runways End

The Runway's End Scout Activity Centre could soon be available for use by schools and youth groups in Farnborough and Aldershot.

Rushmoor Borough Council's Cabinet approved on Tuesday proposals for the Council to work with the Blackwater Scouts and Hampshire County Council to provide a state-of-the-art outdoor activity centre in the heart of Rushmoor.

The new centre, on the border of Aldershot and Farnborough, would cost £2.5 million to develop, with funding sought from a number of sources, including the National Lottery, Sport England and Rushmoor Council. If all goes according to plan, it would open in autumn 2008.

Mike Hughes, Project Leader for Blackwater Scouts, said: "This is an exciting venture which will provide a wide range of new facilities for the whole community including a multi activity projectile hall for archery and shooting, canoe store, shower block for the camp site, new abseiling and climbing wall, high and low ropes, caving system, environmental study areas and residential accommodation for 50 people."

Councillor Mrs Diane Bedford, Cabinet Member for Leisure and Youth, said: "Following independent research, local schools, youth groups and the Scouts have given their support for the project which will provide young people with exciting ways to develop their team building skills, improve their self esteem and keep fit through a range of fun, educational and personally challenging activities. We hope the funding can be found to make this vision a reality."

Hampshire County Council has thrown its considerable expertise in outdoor activity centres behind this project, which will be run in partnership with the Scouts and Rushmoor Council. A County Council spokesman said: "We see this as a real opportunity to develop much needed facilities for schools and young people in the north of Hampshire and it will be a key element of the provision of outdoor learning throughout the area."
