DisabledGo – Rushmoor
Rushmoor Borough Council have teamed up with support organisation, DisabledGo to develop a new online service for disabled people and their families. The online directory of information will be promoted on a disabledGo website which will be launched later in the year.
The website will provide information about access to 500 venues across Aldershot and Farnborough from hotels, leisure facilities and restaurants, to colleges, libraries, hospitals and so on. Each venue will be surveyed on site, in person, by DisabledGo surveyors or fully trained local people and published on the website. The project will encourage disabled people of all ages, their carers and those with walking difficulties to access the community with confidence.
Special consultation meetings are taking place on Wednesday 1st February, where local people can attend and suggest venues, which they think should be included on the site. Everyone is welcome.
The meetings are between 10am – 11.30am at Rushmoor Council Offices, in Farnborough, and between 2pm – 3.30pm at the Princes Hall, in Aldershot. Light refreshments will be available when people arrive.
The Rushmoor Access Group are involved in the project and Chairman Owen Durrett said: “We feel confident that a top class website will be created. This will be used so that disabled people can find services/facilities easier and be given the confidence to access communities as they will have prior knowledge about what to expect. The online guide will show access information associated with the venues such as entrances, where to park, location of toilets, activities taking place and so on.
DisabledGo is an award winning disability organisation that has been running since 2000. The organisation was founded by Chief Executive Dr Gregory Burke who, as a wheelchair user since the age of sixteen, wanted to find a way of breaking down the barriers, which disabled people face when trying to access leisure, education, employment and services in their community.
Anyone interested in attending one of the consultation meetings can contact Tom Felton at DisabledGo – email tom.felton@disabledgo.com or telephone 01438 842710.
