Aldershot Urban Extension

The future expansion of Aldershot to provide 4,500 new homes has moved a step closer with Rushmoor Borough Council's Cabinet giving the go ahead to produce a framework for the development.

The Council will be working with English Partnerships, supported by Defence Estates, to produce a supplementary planning policy document setting out a framework and design guidelines for the Aldershot Urban Extension, which will allow the civilian town to grow for the first time in over seventy years.

The work will build on the findings of the week-long 'Enquiry by Design' event in 2005 run by English Partnerships and the Prince's Foundation. This workshop considered the ways to ensure that issues such as design, energy efficiency, transport links and sustainability are built into the proposals.

The Aldershot Urban Extension will provide much needed new homes in Rushmoor and the south east and will make use of the disused military land released by Project Connaught for development. New accommodation for military personnel will also be built as part of Project Connaught to the north of the Basingstoke Canal.

The production of these documents will help make sure that everything is in place for redevelopment work to start as early as possible, giving potential developers clear guidance in terms of quality and commitment from the Council.

Councillor Peter Moyle, Leader of Rushmoor Borough Council said: "The Council welcomes the opportunity that the Aldershot Urban Extension brings to create a vibrant, pleasant and sustainable place to live. I believe it will be a major asset to the local community and help stimulate continued economic growth and regeneration".
