New Website looks to uncover the secrets of Farnborough's history

Uncovering more secrets about Farnborough’s history is the goal of a new web site that has just been launched. Historic Farnborough charts how the town has changed over the last hundred years or so as it has grown and expanded.

The aim of the site is to show how Farnborough has changed during the 19th and 20th centuries and
into the 21st through a virtual tour of local landmarks, an interactive gallery, and a memories and
family history section. The site also shows how parts of the town's heritage have been lost and aims to
try and preserve it in a small way. Users of the site can decide for themselves whether the changes
have all been successful through online surveys.

Old photographs and information have been obtained from a number of sources and are regularly
being added to with recent photographs of the town to provide an authentic 'now and then'
comparison.

Much of Farnborough’s visible history has vanished over the years through redevelopments in the
town, and a large number of impressive and interesting buildings and areas have been lost such as
Castleden Hall, the National Children’s home, Cove Court and Jubilee Hall. And whilst the town still
has many impressive historical landmarks still seen today such as St. Michael’s Abbey, Farnborough
Hill, the Clockhouse and Knellwood, finding any trace of other historic areas can be quite difficult. Did
you know, for example, that Farnborough used to have a workhouse on Union Street or that
Southwood used to be the site of army barracks?

So now we need your help and hope the web site will encourage local people to submit photographs,
information, memories, and family histories from any period in Farnborough’s history for possible
inclusion on the site.
