However, over millions of years of weathering and temperature changes, the granite eventually wears down. Layers of sandstone then accumulate, subjecting lower layers to increasingly high temperature and pressures. Subsequently, the sandstone's (Calcite) particles are compressed until there are no spaces between them. As the calcite is replaced by silica (Quartz), the texture of the rock changes from grainy to smooth.
